African American

I am the descendant
of tribal royal slaves
and ancient scientific mathematicians.
Rhythmic daughter
of calabash, goat skins, samples and baselines.
Literary heiress
 to Griots and historians.
Moral princess
of Aesops Fabels and Dr. Kings speeches.

Born with Arabic emerging from my scalp and
 Hieroglyphs etched on my lips,
the Yoruba in my chest
pumps past the English in my knees
to the Ebonic soles of my feet.
 Written on my flesh,
are the languages
 my ancestors once remembered
and my off spring won’t forget.
